Course
The course is intended for managers, (shift) operators, maintenance managers, engineers, chemists or analysts, and for anyone who would like to see and understand more about the flue gas side corrosion mechanisms in a waste to energy and biomass plants. We will focus on steel materials and have an outlook on the refractory lining as well. You choose whether the content of the workshop shall be presented in your office, your meeting room or inside your real boiler. The knowledge can be adapted to any other installation where temperatures and chemistry cause wear of materials as well.
Content
- General Introduction to corrosion, erosion and abrasion, as well as their combinations
- Wear mechanisms: Practical examples: We will see and understand practical examples, not study theories about corrosion. You can take samples with you and characterize the wear mechanisms during the course yourself or at the end together with us.
- High temperature corrosion on boiler and superheater tubes, as well as low temperature corrosion in flue gas cleaning: Some details about the main hotspots with wear in a WtE-plant.
- Correlation with boiler operation: Wear in WtE-plants is mostly caused by corrosion, but seldomly by material or installation quality. It is mostly a consequence of operation (fuel-fire-fouling). Therefore, active corrosion protection can be done by boiler operation itself.
- Corrosion protection: Passive corrosion protection by material solutions. We will focus on the major material solutions, which are:
- Weld overlay cladding
- Thermal spray coating
- Stainless steel
- Galvanizing
- Others: Composite tubes, energetic cladding, co-extrusion
- NDT and lifetime analysis during outages: We adapt the learned lessons from the course room to your boiler with the view from the maintenance side.
- Fouling and corrosion monitoring and fitness for purpose analysis during boiler operation: The market offers several probes to test fouling and corrosion mechanisms or materials during boiler operation. Probes can e.g. deliver results in short time and allow to assess corrosion risks of specific fuels.
- Failure analysis: What to do when wear is detected, or a leakage has occurred? We sum up the workshop together and define your approach to handle failure cases:
- Which samples are required?
- Which information is required?
- Which analytical methods are swift and smart (and affordable)?
